Now since the pharmaceutical industry rose we have been delegating our health? And don’t get me wrong they are marvelous – the results and the number of lives they have saved is incredible. However, for chronic pain sufferers, the results are not so promising. Globally, chronic pain has more than doubled in just over a decade. There are more cases of cancer and mental health disorders than ever. The results are in – we’ve tried it and it’s not working!
Your health is your responsibility and when you realise this and decide to take back your responsibility, you will start to take control of your life.
Here are some things that may get in the way of you taking responsibility and moving forward.
Before I do share – know that the reasons for procrastinating are varied from person to person and from situation to situation. Some common emotional reasons that many of us can identify with are:
- Instant Gratification – smaller, easier tasks are, well, smaller & easier. So we are satisfied sooner, the painkiller feeds this one.
- Easily Distracted – as in Shiny Object Syndrome, we try different treatments, read books, see healers, and search constantly for the answers but never giving anything enough time.
- Perfectionism – we expect everything to be perfect, I’ll go for that walk when I get my new trainers, new outfit, my friend can come or whatever excuse you find. Try on a new mantra: progress not perfection (Handy Tip).
- Waiting for Inspiration – because you’ll certainly feel more like doing it later (Ha!)
- Fear of the Unknown – what you don’t know won’t hurt you? What if I hurt myself? Best not do it!
- Lack of Motivation – tired/stressed/emotionally drained? Of course, you are – you are in pain, deep breath and know you can do this.
- Lack of Information – it’s surprising how much of the time it comes down to this, so ask yourself! Is it an excuse or do I need more information?
- Fear of Failure – does that need explaining?
- Fear of Success – really? Yes, do you really want more responsibility, do you really want to go back to work at that job you hated. This one is a really hard pill to swallow and you may disregard but please ask yourself before moving on in disgust, “am I getting a payoff somewhere in my life by being in pain”.
- Defense Mechanisms – avoidance (you already know it’s hard), denial (of course you’ll get it done. Ha!)

- Start with something easy, so you build up confidence and momentum gradually …
- Start with something hard. In fact, start with the thing you don’t want to do the most – that’ll give you confidence, momentum, and inspiration in a flash!
- Figure out exactly what the problem is – lack of motivation, need more info, it’s not perfect?
- Use the “salami method” (I love this one, not sure who came up with it first): break down what you need to do into little slices (as in, you eat an elephant one bite at a time).
- Tell other people about what you are “going to do.” They will keep you honest, i.e. hold you accountable.
